How to play NFL Build a Player

  1. Pick a position. Quarterback, running back or wide receiver. Each has six traits, from Arm and Accuracy to Speed and Red zone.
  2. Spin the wheel. It lands on a real NFL player in one of his seasons from 2001 to 2025. Stars come up more often.
  3. Take one trait from him. Tap an open trait: your player gets his rating there, a percentile among every season at the position since 2001. You can’t take it back.
  4. Use your 2 re-spins wisely. Don’t like the player on the wheel? Spin again, twice per build.
  5. Play the season. Fill all six traits and your player plays 17 games: a full stat line, his team’s record, awards, and where he ranks among every real season since 2001.

The traits, position by position

Every trait comes from a real stat line, so a spin always tells a true story: the receiver who gives you Speed really averaged that many yards per catch.

Quarterback (QB)

  • Arm: Deep ball: completions of 20+ yards per attempt.
  • Accuracy: Completion percentage.
  • Touchdowns: Touchdown passes per attempt.
  • Poise: Few interceptions, sacks and fumbles per dropback.
  • Legs: Rushing yards and touchdowns per game.
  • Winner: His team’s regular-season record that year.

Running back (RB)

  • Speed: Breakaway runs of 20+ yards per carry.
  • Vision: Yards per carry.
  • Power: Touchdowns and first downs per carry.
  • Workhorse: Carries per game.
  • Hands: Receptions and receiving yards per game.
  • Winner: His team’s regular-season record that year.

Wide receiver (WR)

  • Speed: Yards per catch.
  • Big play: Catches of 20+ yards per game.
  • Go-to: Catches per game.
  • Routes: Share of catches that move the chains.
  • Red zone: Receiving touchdowns per game.
  • Winner: His team’s regular-season record that year.

Build a Player FAQ

What is Build a Player?
A spin-the-wheel NFL game. Each spin lands on a real player in one of his seasons from 2001 to 2025, and you take one trait from him: a quarterback’s arm, a running back’s speed, a receiver’s hands in the red zone. After six traits your player plays a 17-game season, and you see where it ranks among every real season since 2001.
Which players can come up on the wheel?
Every regular season since 2001 by a starter-level player: 820 quarterback seasons with 224 or more pass attempts, 970 running back seasons with 120 or more carries and 1,564 wide receiver seasons with 40 or more catches. Stars come up more often than backups, and one player can only donate once per build.
How are the ratings calculated?
Each trait is a percentile among every season at the position since 2001, from 1 to 99. A 99 Arm means one of the highest rates of 20-yard completions of the era; Poise counts interceptions, sacks and fumbles per dropback, so fewer is better; Winner is the team’s record that year. The traits list below says what each one measures.
How is the season simulated?
Each trait places your player in the real range of the matching stat: elite Accuracy pulls his completion rate toward the best seasons since 2001, though never all the way, because no real player was the best at everything at once. A season-long form factor makes some years click more than others. His team’s record comes from his own level and his Winner trait.
What is the Daily build?
Everyone gets the same spins each day, one build per position, so you can compare players with friends. It resets at midnight New York time. Free play gives you new spins every build, as many times as you like.
Is NFL Build a Player free?
Yes. It is free in your browser on a phone or computer, with no account and no limit on free builds.
